E

EP

Extreme Pressure

EP ADDITIVES

Reduce friction, wear, and scoring under certain conditions of boundary lubrications. Chemical EP additives are more or less corrosive depending on type and actual conditions of service. Lubricating solids can provide EP characteristics without corrosive chemical action.

H

H1

USDA Code for lubricants acceptable for use where incidental contact with food products is possible. Formerly AA.

H2

USDA Code for lubricants acceptable for use where there is no possible contact with food products. Formely BB.

HALAL

Foods that are permissable according to Islamic law

I

ISO

International Standards Organization, rue de Varembe, Case Postal 56, CH-1211 Geneva 20, Switzerland

Has devised a viscosity grading system which specifies this viscosity ranges of industrial oils. ISO is an international body with a membership of over 50 countries - including USA, USSR, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Japan.

K

KOSHER

Foods that conform to the regulations of Jewish religion

Compounds for use as general cleaning agents on all surfaces, or for use with steam or mechanical cleaning devices in all departments

NSF H2
Lubricants with no food contact

NSF A3
Acid cleaners

NSF HX-1
Ingredients for use in H1 Lubricants (incidental contact)

NSF A8
Degreasers or carbon removers for food cooking or smoking equipment

NSF HX-2
Ingredients for use in lubricants with no food contact

SUS

Saybolt Universal Seconds. See VISCOSITY

V

VISCOSITY

A measure of liquid resistance to flow at specified temperatures. Several different systems for measuring viscosity are described below.

KINEMATIC VISCOSITY

Measured by rate of flow through capillary tubes which permit highly accurate measurement. Calculated in centistokes, kinematic viscosity has worldwide application and is measured at standard Fahrenheit and Celsius (formerly Centigrade) temperatures.

SAYBOLT UNIVERSAL VISCOSITY

Measured in seconds (SUS) of time required for a fixed volume to flow through a standard tube. Typical test temperatures are 100°F and 210°F.
